Rethinking the identity problem in African philosophy

In this work, we reconsider the question of African identity and how it conflates with the various nuanced dimensions of the African. We argue that as an offshoot of hegemonic scholarship, the debate on identity pitches the Africans against the ‘other’. We demonstrate that in this process of self-recognition and self-discovery, the Africans are at war with the self. This process of discovery of the African person has been ongoing through principled academic engagements. We also show how conversational thinking makes epistemic dissent rewarding within the African in the quest for identity and between the African and other cultures
