D'une maniere generale, le modele de localisation des sites des anciennes communautes fermieres a l'interieur des terres du KwaZulu-Natal est le suivant : les sites de l'Age du Fer ancien sont situes en bord de rivieres en dessous de 1000 m d'altitude et s'etendent sur une surface de 8 a 10 hectares, constituant de grands villages vraisemblablement habites par plusieurs centaines de personnes sur une longue periode. La metallurgie du fer est repandue sur la plupart des sites. D'apres de recentes decouvertes sur une serie de sites situes en bas des versants du plateau oriental et particulierement dans la vallee de Thukela, l'auteur propose une revision de plusieurs aspects de ce modele
