Regional trade relations in the eastern Lake Victoria region are examined from the perspective of peoples living around the southern side of the Gulf of Kavirondo. Salt from a source located at Kaksingiri was traded for iron, canoes, and, in times of famine, foodstuffs, with other peoples around the Lake. This trade, including that in human beings, appears to have been in full swing in the nineteenth century
