Dr. Phillipson's article is the first of a series of three to be published in successive issues of Azania. It represents an important contribution to knowledge of the later Pleistocenejearly Holocene industries of the Upper Zambezi Valley. The principal results of an archaeological survey of the northern part of the Upper Zambezi Valley are presented. These include a description of the finds from two excavated sites and several surface collections. Most of the finds are interpreted as belonging to a sequence which covers the transition from a ‘mode three’ to a ‘mode five’ technology, and which exhibits affinities to contemporary material from the Zaire Basin. This transition probably took place within the last few thousand years. Material from Kaoma,-on the eastern edge of the Upper Zambezi Basin, is typologically older and may not belong to the same cultural sequence
