Ongoing archaeological surveys and excavations in central Sudan over the past few decades have documented many Neolithic horizons, varying in contexts and landscapes. Comprehensive studies of lithic artefacts, pottery and palaeoenvironmental proxies have revealed different occupation patterns and multiple mechanisms that exploit the local environment. Contrasts are most evident between sites located along the Middle Nile and those found in the Butana region and eastern Sudan. Although many research projects have been conducted in central Sudan, the northern Butana area remains unexplored despite its importance in understanding the relationship between the Nile, the Atbara River and eastern Sudan. This paper presents a new extension of the area’s late prehistoric archaeology based on archaeological survey and excavation in northern Butana focusing on site settings, land use, occupation patterns and material culture, with special attention to the description of the terminal Neolithic landscape and the results of excavations at the stratified context of site NB4
