This paper, which is slightly unusual for Azania but not outside its scope, is offered in memory of Neville Chittick, the late editor of this journal and Director of the British Institute in Eastern Africa. G.R.H. Wright was Neville's archaeological companion on his first expedition overseas. He has pursued a broad interest in Near Eastern archaeology and the history of religions. The author has not had the opportunity of undertaking his own fieldwork in the Upper Nile region. His information on that is derived from his reading of the ethnographic literature which has inspired the comparative considerations explained and discussed in the latter part of the article. For a more extensive treatment of this subject by the author, see his volume As on the First Day (Brill, Leiden, 1987)
