The author of this note, G.W.B. Huntingford, who died recently, had a varied and distinguished life in East African countries and at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London. We are pleased to publish this account of one of the early towns of northern Somalia, which he visited 35 years ago. It is a useful contribution to the meagre knowledge of the archaeology of the region, and calls to mind the author's great contribution to studies in the East African field. We look forward to the publication of Dr Huntingford's new redaction of The Periplus of the Erythraean Sea
