This paper examines two closely related institutions of medieval and post-medieval Ethiopia: the moving camp and the military settlement, both of which on occasion played a role normally associated with a capital. The second part of the study attempts to consider the traditional Ethiopian capital, the composition and size of its population, the type of site usually selected for it, the extent to which it was in one period or another fortified—and the principal features common to such settlements
