Family support for the elderly is a tradition in China. How to give full play to the function of family eldercare in a rapidly changing social environment is a social problem of growing public concern. Many studies in the past discussed the burden of family support for the elderly merely in general terms and have thus blurred the true circumstances of this problem. This article, based on data from a large sample survey, places the burden of family support for the elderly under three indices to study the current state of family support for the elderly in China. The results indicate that elderly people in China display a relatively high degree of independence in such respects as financial self-support, self-care in everyday life, and spiritual life. Thus, on the whole, the Chinese family is not heavily burdened in providing support for the elderly
