Beginning in 1958 three hydropower stations—the Yanguo, Liujia, and Bapan Gorges dams—were constructed on the mainstream of the Yellow River in the northern part of the Linxia-Hui Autonomous Prefecture in Gansu Province. On the one hand, these three projects provided an enormous amount of electrical power for industrial and agricultural production in the northwest region of the country and contributed huge amounts of capital for the country; on the other hand, many problems occurred during the process of population resettlement that, for a variety of historical and other reasons, remain to this day
