The history of cities and towns dates back at least five to six thousand years. Only recently the ruins of an ancient city that existed more than ten thousand years ago were discovered. But the worldwide process of sustained and accelerated concentration of urban population—the process of urbanization—is something that has occurred only in the last two hundred years. According to estimates, urban population accounted for only 2 percent of the total world population in 1800. It was 4 percent in 1900, topped 20 percent in 1925, and has reached 40 percent today
