In this article, the nativization of Chinese anthropology is seen as part of the effort throughout the twentieth century to "modernize" China; moreover, it is seen as the manifestation of a complex, a discourse. Nativizing anthropology is not simply an academic exercise. It is a dialogue with the West, a "cry of grief and indignation" at the political and economic inequities perpetrated by foreign powers during the opening of China to the West. In allowing academic openness and exchange, Chinese anthropology has entered a phase of "counter-ideology" and "self-consciousness" wherein openness is a prerequisite for nativization
