Educated people in China have been promoting the concept of sex education since the May Fourth Movement [of 1919]. Zhang Jingsheng (1889-1970) was the true pioneer of sex education in China. As early as 1920 he advocated birth control and contraception. What is more, he linked the notion of sex education with cultivating a desirable life philosophy, associating sex education with good social organization. Such a proposal would be considered progressive today, and was even more so in the China of the 1920s and 1930s. In 1933, in the essay "Sexual Psychology" published in Night Readings (Ye du chao), Zhou Zuoren (1885-1967) introduced to China's readership the British writer Havelock Ellis (The Psychology of Sex). As head of the division of humanities at Beijing University, Zhou encouraged students to study sex education, to do research on this topic, and to write theses on it. Pan Guangdan (1899-1976) began his translation of Ellis's The Psychology of Sex in November 1939, and was still translating works on sex into the 1940s. Lu Xun (1881-1936) instructed his students on the subject of sex education as far back as 1909, and in his Fortress Mentality (Jianbi qingye zhuyi) wrote: "Educators concerned with morals and manners must give priority to liberating human nature and popularizing education, particularly sex education." Zhang Jingsheng, Zhou Zuoren, Pan Guangdan, Lu Xun, and others of their generation opened the first chapter of the history of Chinese sex education
