The Naxi (or "Nari," which is how they refer to themselves; or "Mosuo," which is how they are known historically) still retain many traces of ancient forms of the institutions of family and marriage. In 1963, I investigated the Naxi walking marriage (zouhun) and matrilineal systems in Yongning, Ninglang County, Yunnan. In 1980, I investigated the Naxi family and marriage in Yanyuan and Muli counties, Sichuan. There were 15,094 Naxi people, consisting of 2,486 households. in Yanyuan and Muli counties. Our investigation covered 3,311 persons in 411 households
