Cet article examine l’évolution des approches ethnographiques dans l’étude des gangs. Il divise l’histoire de ce sous-champ en quatre époques distinctes : classique, interstitielle, contemporaine et la « révolution Rodgers ». La plus récente, la « révolution Rodgers », se concentre principalement sur l’Amérique latine et s’inspire des travaux de Dennis Rodgers ainsi que de ses étudiants. Ce travail fournit des détails considérables sur les influences culturelles, historiques et politiques qui ont produit des gangs dans cette région du monde. L’article souligne également les différentes approches ethnographiques mobilisées dans l’étude des gangs ainsi que leurs rôles dans la société contemporaine
