This study explores the relatively unknown author of a 1538 map of Flanders, Pieter van der Beke, and the cartographic and cultural environment in which it was produced. To this end, the possible influences the map had throughout the Low Lands will be considered in light of the Reform movement popularized during this period, but also in light of the Fall of Ghent in 1539 as an indication of Imperial control that would, under Philip II, become the Counter Reformation. Thus, we will attempt to fix upon van der Beke's biography and that of his associates while reconsidering the primary and secondary sources that have thence characterized both the man and the map
