This article sets out to question the supposed gloomy realism of the Dutch novel by exploring the work of three writers: the neo-romantic historical fiction of Van Schendel and J. J. Slauerhoff and the historical fantasy of Jo van Ammers-Küller. All the works discussed feature nomadic characters who are analysed in the light of recent thinking on ‘nomadic subjectivity’. It emerges that the characters' wanderings do not necessarily lead to mobility of their sense of self. The characters of Van Ammers-Küller foreshadow the new kind of subjectivity, particularly the cross-dressing Elzelina, heroine of the novel bearing her name
