Between 1965 and 1997 the Dutch-Jewish literary author and professor of criminology Andreas Burnier published eight novels, two works of poetry, two collections of short stories, and collections of essays. Despite this considerable literary production over three decades, she is best known in the Netherlands for her erudite but outspoken essayistic work which deals with the limits of science, mysticism and non-Western philosophy, and which contains a fierce polemic against an array of ethical and criminological issues, among others genetic manipulation and euthanasia. (Burnier wrote on the latter subject long before the laws that legalized certain forms of euthanasia came to pass in the Netherlands). Most recently, Burnier extensively explored Jewish religion and her own Jewish background in her work. Whereas Burnier primarily has been thought of as an important “public intellectual” (especially after 1988, when she retired early from academia), she is not necessarily considered to be the major literary author that she also is, so much so that when she died unexpectedly of a stroke in September of 2002, most of her literary work turned out to be unavailable in print
