This essay focuses on 400 years of colonial contact between the Dutch and the Indonesians, and on the legal history that developed as a consequence. Discussing a number of specific episodes serves to delineate the characteristic features of the legal legacy of the colonial Netherlands Indies, its historical development, its actual practice and its postcolonial continuities. Against this background, the explorations undertaken here produce new readings of Dutch colonial writers such as Multatuli, Daum and Van der Hoogte, and a new postcolonial analysis of the so-called haatzaai-articles in Dutch law and their use in colonial society as well as in contemporary multicultural Netherlands
