As I was preparing this lecture, what could be the prime question for this congress came to mind: who may be the most apt figurehead for this congress? You will probably immediately guess correctly if I tell you that no one more than this person has seen the task of education so clearly and argued it in such detail in this century—the task of arousing and developing the capacity and willingness for dialogue, to "open" people to "encounter" and "relating," to use his vocabulary. "Mankind and humanity come into being in genuine encounters": this statement of his could be the title for this congress. But group living and group learning—that is, human life in general, and love—are possible only if dialogue becomes a mode of existence
