The official view of Germany assumed antagonistic traits during the years of the cold war and these have again begun to stir since the end of the cold war. Perception of the GDR was no longer determined by total antagonism and the need for legitimation, but by empirical systemic studies. The official GDR policy fluctuated in the light of this changed perception between a more distinct demarcation and the discovery of common economic, technical, and political interests. Whether and to what extent such a change in the picture of Germany has been reflected in school textbooks is a question that requires analysis. The periods 1949-56, 1957-62, 1963-69, and 1970 on are investigated taking into account contemporary gaps, and especially gaps in German policy, decisions in educational policy, and changing trends in teaching methods that were reflected, if with some delay, in school textbooks
