This paper examines non‐voting through an analysis of survey data on the 1989 general election in Ireland Short and long term non‐voters are distinguished, using answers given by the respondents themselves. These two types are then shown to be very different from one another in terms of political attitudes and social background. Only long term non‐voters differ significantly from voters
