Though successful in providing affordable housing and employment opportunities within communities of deprivation, community-based development organizations-CBDOs-are criticized by both the activist left and social service scholars. The former claim that CBDOs ignore advocacy work; the latter, that CBDOs minimize social service efforts. Using case study material, this article argues the opposite: community-based development organizations succeed by linking together developmental, advocacy, and social service practices
