DOROT’s Summer Teen Internship Program provides an adaptable model for engaging high school students and older adults in mutually beneficial experiences that alleviate social isolation for both groups. The program engages teens in positive experiences to break down social barriers caused by ageism and builds social connections with older adults. Frequent and purposeful interactions over the course of four-week sessions enable each generation to learn from the other. The program combines a careful selection process, social service support for older adult participants, a service-learning approach, and student peer groups with innovative intergenerational programming. The range of program activities includes visits to older adults’ homes, telephone-based classes, documentary film-making, and performing arts workshops. The program concludes with a ceremony created and presented by the teen interns for the older adults, friends, and family. DOROT has also adapted this model for a senior center environment. Program evaluation reveals that 100% of teens and older adults had a meaningful experience and students’ impressions of older adults became significantly more favorable after participating in the program
