In the village of Pabelan, Kecamatan (subdistrict) Mungkit, about3.5 km from the small city of Muntilan is a pesantren (literally place of the santri that is, students) called Balai Pendidikan Pondok Pesantren (Pondok Pabelan Educational Institution). It is built on approximately two hectares of land and has an additional 2.5 ha of sawah (irrigated rice-land) let by the village officials which is used as a practical skills-training site for students as well as the pondok's farmland. The buildings in the pondok (boarding school) are simple. The classrooms, dormitory, canteen, co-operative shop, and so on are built of bamboo and wood with dirt floors and foundations of stones, gathered from the river. With its buildings scattered among clusters of bamboo, coconut and fruit trees the pesantren is, of course, a calm place. The pondok's gardens are planted with citrus trees. The complex appears clean and orderly and the water in the river is clear. From this cursory glance there is nothing that could perhaps be regarded as special in this pondok. It resembles other pesantren in Java: very near to being a symbol of the backwardness of a traditional society. When we compare it with state-run schools - and the comparison reveals greater differences with several private schools run by Christian churches and missions - one question would certainly arise: does an educational institute of this type still have the right to exist? The answer to this question is best seen from Pondok Pabelan's growth, from which we can observe the community's view of it. In 1965, the year of its foundation, Pabelan had only 35 students, 19 of whom were young
