The philosophy behind the radiocarbon dating method is briefly described from an historical standpoint, including normalizations, secular activity variations and calibrations. Special attention is paid to the global atmospheric radiocarbon activity differences (regional variations of the radiocarbon in carbon dioxide), which have long been under scrutiny. Apart from carbon dioxide of volcanic origin or from wells, these are chiefly attributed to oceanic circulation and the exchange between the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and that in the oceans
