The mountain areas take up most of today's Norwegian landmass, and they have always been of economic importance to most Norwegian farmers. Man's evaluation of the different resources has varied throughout prehistoric and historic times, depending on settlement pattern, and socio‐economic and political development. But reindeer, fur animals, grouse; rocks like quartzite, rock crystal and soapstone; bog iron; the mountain pastures, grass for haymaking, berries (blueberries, cloudberries and lingonberries) and peat have singly or together drawn man to the mountain areas from the older Stone Age until modern times
