The study of plant remains (charcoal, carbonized seeds and fruits, mudbrick impressions) from Qal'at al-Bahrain (Bahrain archipelago, Arabian/Persian Gulf) has allowed us to reconstruct the ancient vegetation as well as the site 's plant economy, from the end of the 3rd millennium ВС until the Seleucid-Parthian period. Wood was both exploited locally (from mangroves, open woodlands and halophytic communities) and imported from other regions of the Middle East. Irrigated palm-gardens — in which numerous cultivais such as date-palms, barley, wheat, luzern, coriander, sesame, cotton, grape, jujuba and pomegranate were grown — constituted, the base of the local economy
