At Mehrgarh-Nausharo, the presence of glazed beads as early as the 5th millennium ВС (Chalcolithic period) and their evolution till the end of the 3rd millennium now places the emergence of vitrified materials in the Indus area at a time contemporaneous of their emergence in the Near and Middle East (Mesopotamia and Egypt). As early as its beginning and during the whole first phase of their development, i.e. between 4 500 and 2 000 ВС, these materials show regional differences and similarities. Whereas differences principally concern the glazing recipes and the technics and methods of vitrification used in the three areas, the first glazed objects are characterized by the same objects (beads), the same core materials (steatite and ground quartz) and the same visual appearance : beads are artificially coloured in blue-green. If the manufacturing differences attest the existence of at least two local and probably independent centers of invention, one located in the Middle East (Mesopotamia or/and Egypt) and the other (Indus) further East, similarities and the contemporaneity of emergence as well could indicate similar origins and reasons in the two areas. These ones are then interpreted to the light of technical, socio-economic and cultural archaeological contexts. The suggestions are the following : 1) the material context which characterized the Chalcolithic period in the three areas gathered the technical conditions as well as the necessary and favourable means for the invention of artificial materials (particularly due to a controlled and increased use of fire as a tool in different crafts activities) and 2) the initial impetus of such an invention would rather come from psychical factors (need and willingness to dominate and to manipulate the mineral world) than from economical or social ones, these latter factors appear only later when vitrified materials have a long two millennia history behind
