Controversial Economic Interpretations of the Financial Crisis: Some Critical Remarks As a result of the recent financial crisis that started in the United States and that spread around the world by, at the latest, mid-September 2008, the most serious global economic downturn in decades is expected for 2009. This article argues that there are, broadly, three main theoretical interpretations of the crisis and its causes – a Keynesian demand-side focus, a fundamental liberal economic position and an ordo-liberal approach. Each interpretation has its own implications for regulations. The main advantages and disadvantages of these approaches are discussed. The article concludes with economic policy implications that, firstly, stress the axiom of ‘as much market as possible, as much state as necessary’ and, secondly, try to reduce considerably the probability of a major macro-economic ‘accident’
