Respect for human dignity and belief in human potential are sacred principles in most religious traditions and are also pivotal goals of human rights and development agencies. There are a range of areas where religion and gender intersect, each illustrating some reasons for tensions, areas for common ground, and potential avenues for productive engagement. These include: female genital cutting, domestic violence, preference of families for male offspring (which leads to selective abortion, infanticide, and relative neglect of daughters), rape as a tool of war and conflict, sex trafficking, family planning (including child spacing), early marriage, and HIV/AIDS
