Distrust between adversaries makes retreat into isolation a temptation, so globalinter-faith peacemaking needs to invest in religious gestures and justice. Leaders honor opponents' values by making religious gestures. Social justice must accompany these gestures, offering alienated people fulfillment of their needs so that they turn to peacemakers and not to extremists. Any criticism during conflict must be an objective critique of both sides combined with positive investment to work through complex problems. Religion can be a bridge, not a barrier, by making dialogue possible when no political relationship is possible and by bringing about peace
