The experience of Laotian Christians has much to tell us about the tension between religion and culture. Indeed, we cannot avoid the fact that culture provides the context for faith, as well as the environment in which it is practiced. Although faith and culture sometimes clash, we must not neglect the positive potential of a properly enculturated faith. In part as a result of the teachings of missionaries emphasizing cultural separatism and withdrawal, converts to Christianity inadvertently confirm stereotypes and heighten suspicions among the surrounding non-Christian society
