Two films about the “real face” of Islam ultimately fail to capture the complexity of life as a Western Muslim. The narrative format of “Islam vs. Islamists” overshadows the voice of the moderate with that of the extremist, and fails to engage in nuanced questions of personal faith and public life. The polarization presented by “Islam vs. Islamists” is even more apparent in contrast to “The Muslim Americans” which interviews a broader range of sources and thus is more successful in combating stereotypes. While both films tell specific aspects of Western Muslims' stories, neither captures the complexity of their situation
