In order to accommodate, in a tentative manner, the findings of neurobiology with psychoanalytic concepts, we first present a short synopsis of contemporary conceptualisations of brain functioning. Based foremost on the theories of W. J. Freeman with their importance attributed to intentionality and meaning, an attempt is made to translate intentional strivings from animal models to the psychoanalytic situation, without recourse to established and reiterated psychoanalytic theorising
