The present essay discusses the effects of certain kinds of scientific proposals in the public space. The author writes about the efforts to identify the natural foundations (neuro-anatomical and neuro-physiological) of human ethical and moral faculties. He develops a radical critique of those efforts as clearly inconclusive. The author argues that the selection of this kind of explanation, and its public impact on the so-called Euro-American contemporary societies, has to be understood in the context of an historical sociology of modernity
