La stature moyenne des populations adultes constitue un indice de developpement humain appele aussi niveau de vie biologique. Elle renseigne principalement sur les conditions de vie des premieres annees de l’existence. La stature des conscrits alsaciens du Premier Empire permet d’evaluer le niveau de vie des cohortes nees entre 1780 et 1794. La serie constituee (N = 8 063) n’est pas homogene : la stature minimale legale varie de meme que l’âge effectif d’examen. Plusieurs estimations du trend sont donc proposees, qui montrent toutes une diminution de la stature des cohortes nees entre 1780 et 1784. Par la suite, les differentes croissances de rattrapage entre 18 et 20 ans conduisent a presenter des estimations differentes, dont les plus vraisemblables montrent un maintien de la stature des cohortes nees de 1787 a 1792
