The history of modern European thought has characterized the pursuit of philosophy as an essentially Greek occupation. The Greco-Roman philosophical tradition has also provided models and alibis for the European colonial project. What, then, does it mean to be an African philosopher in this historical context? Can the African philosopher utilize the Greco-Roman tradition for the sake of postcolonialist critique? Or does the African philosopher end up replicating the sins of the father like Oedipus, King of Thebes? This article examines V. Y. Mudimbe’s interest in the meaning of this myth for the postcolonial African philosopher.
