Artiklen diskuterer forholdet mellem historiografiske studier på den ene side og kognitive og evolutionære teorier og modeller på den anden. På den baggrund præsenteres tre epistemologiske modeller for interaktionen mellem psykologi, historie og sociokulturelle systemer og disse diskuteres i forhold til forskerens mål med undersøgelse. Der argumenteres for, at historiografien nødvendigvis må inddrage aktuelle psykologiske modeller for ikke at bygge sine studier på forældet eller naiv psykologi
