Cet article propose une brève histoire intellectuelle de la famille noire américaine. Il retrace la controverse autour du rapport de Patrick Moynihan sur The Negro Family (1965) et en évalue les conséquences politiques et sociales. Il souligne comment le rapport a été utilisé pour occulter le fait que la relation entre famille et pauvreté est moins raciale que structurelle et dépendante des inégalités économiques et sociales dont sont victimes les Afro-Américains, et d’autres minorités, aux États-Unis
