The Waning of the “Catholic Other” and Catholicism in American Life after 1965

Les catholiques américains ont longtemps été considérés comme des « outsiders » par rapport à l’establishment protestant. Pourtant l’historiographie récente a montré qu’ils ont eu une influence culturelle plus importante que leur prétendue extériorité ne l’aurait permis. L’article démontre que les catholiques des États-Unis ont été porteurs d’une série de tendances culturelles et sociales importantes au sein de la société américaine depuis 1965 : un enthousiasme pour la démocratie participative pour le plus grand nombre, une forte opposition envers les institutions établies, et un goût prononcé pour la diversité et le multiculturalisme. L’article s’attache à illustrer les éléments de changement et de continuité au sein du catholicisme des États-Unis depuis le concile Vatican II tout en resituant ces évolutions dans le contexte plus large des transformations de la société américaine depuis 1965
