Although the practice of gambling, especially games of skill, involves specialized knowledge, the role of chance would be still predominant, even if it is not exclusive. Based on semi-structured interviews with Italians players of “Lotto”, Roulette, horse and soccer betting, this article shows that a careful analysis of representations among players makes scenario extremely complex. For respondents, chance seems like a « relative » concept: beyond the structural components of the game, it is differently perceived according to the player’s level of knowledge and skills (real or imagined). Thirteen profile players and four playing modes are identified, highlighting the use of a wide range of knowledge and skills to feed decisions, strategies and gamblers’ beliefs. Concluding remarks and future directions for research and development are explored
