A description of the context, ideas and objectives that led to the constitution and functioning of the Gulbenkian Commission for the Restructuring of the Social Sciences, chaired by Immanuel Wallerstein, is made. The way Wallerstein conceived to arrive at a final report, which was published in English in 1996 and immediately followed by translations published in 24 different languages, is also mentioned. The report was entitled Open the Social Sciences and its impact was huge. Most of the discussions it stimulated were very much open, in the spirit the Gulbenkian Commission wished they would proceed. The intellectual achievement of the report is a clear indication of the enthusiasm, vision and leadership of Immanuel Wallerstein
