Une description complète de l’adolescence peut être faite à partir d’un modèle conceptuel articulant deux types de systèmes, ouverts et fermés. Loin de représenter des catégories diagnostiques, ces systèmes sont des constructions illustrant différents choix possibles, pour l’adolescent, d’adaptation à un moment critique de son développement. Les systèmes ouverts signent l’effort pour transformer le soi, tandis que les systèmes fermés indiquent un besoin de contrôler, forcer, changer les autres. La référence à ces deux systèmes est profondément porteuse pour la pratique et la théorie, notamment parce qu’ils ouvrent à un regard différent sur l’adolescence, dont le but ne serait plus la séparation mais bien la transformation
