The review proposes a reconsideration of Die osterreichisch-ungarische Monarchie in Wort und Bild, also known as the Kronprinzenwerk (KPW), an ethnographic presentation of Austria-Hungary in 24 volumes which appeared between 1889 and 1902 in two parallel versions, one in German and the other in Hungarian. Besides reference to the renewed attention the KPW met with since 1989, and an overview of its mode of production, I try to formulate some notes of caution for its present-day readers. I argue that its main interest is heuristic. Viewed in context it can add details and vividness to our picture of the latter days of the Habsburg Empire
