Researchers engaging in cross‐national analysis have not consistently established post hoc the content validity of their measures across self‐report surveys. We employ the National Violence Against Women Survey in the United States and the Swiss component of the International Violence Against Women Survey to illustrate the process of equating survey items post hoc to establish content validity across the surveys. Building upon the criteria used in past cross‐national studies, we employ post hoc three criteria—inclusion of identical survey items, standardization of the reference period, and consideration of the perpetrator's sex—to create comparable victimization measures across these two surveys. We create a continuum of ‘'less'’ to ‘'more'’ comparable measures of threats, physical violence, and rape against women to compare victimization estimates across these two surveys. Implications of our results for establishing content validity post hoc in comparative victimization research are discussed
