Results of a questionnaire about sexual activity contraceptive practice sexual attitudes and guilt administered to 18-19 year old college women in 1983 were compared to similar testing of cohorts from 1973 and 1978. The subjects were history students at the University of Texas; the questionnaire was the Mosher True-False Sex-Guilt Inventory. There was an increase in sex guilt a decrease in sexual activity and an increase in effective contraception between 1978 and 1983. Sexual behavior and contraception returned to the same level as in 1973 and attitude toward sex was more conservative than in the prior cohorts. The that high sex guilt scores would be associated with use of less effective contraception the emotional inhibition hypothesis was upheld. The results were interpreted to mean that sexual activity follows social norms but high sex guilt may cause a switch from effective methods such as the pill to ineffective methods such as withdrawal or no method at all
