Marc Legrand begins with the fact that the great amount of time spent by pupils learning mathematics is disproportionate to the small role it plays in their education. This failure is not due to the pupils' imability but to the poor teaching of mathematics. During maths lessons, the pupils are hardly ever allowed to express doubt ; the teacher states the theorem as can sbsolute truth. The author presents a teaching method of mathematics based on the cognitive conflict and describes a teaching experiment carried out with first and second year university students
