Current interpretations of the distribution of party preferences in the Italian electorate emphasize the role of socioeconomic factors, political traditions and the influence of organizational networks related to politically oriented organizations or institutions. Drawing on both survey and aggregate data, and utilizing path analysis, it is shown that these interpretations are to some extent complementary and can be accommodated in a more general model. The direct and indirect influence of the several factors analyzed is assessed
