A principal cost to most state legislators is the number of days they must spend in the state capital. A principal benefit is their success rate on legislative proposals. Cost-benefit relationships are examined in a regression analysis of data collected for 99 chambers. The number of legislative workdays and member legislation passage rates are shown to be important factors in the extent to which legislators are satisfied with legislative outcomes. The results have implications for the desirability of recent trends toward longer legislative sessions
